The Adrian Athletic Department will highlight and celebrate each of the spring sports it offers. The information and player spotlights will be provided by the program’s head coach. The fourth installment is the boys golf program and Coach Lewis:
The 2020 Boys Golf team was shaping up to be one of the best the Maples have fielded in years. With seven returning players, including four seniors, and 11 new players joining the team, we were poised for a great season. In total, 18 boys made the team and I believe this would have been one of the largest teams in school history. A number of our returning players were honored with All County nods in 2019 and with a few of the newcomers showing promise over the winter and early spring, I was excited at where this season could lead. Sadly, we were not able to see what this group could have accomplished, but we look forward to another large team for next season.
I do want to take this opportunity to thank all of the boys who joined the team, as well as my returning starters. Our seniors were peaking at just the right time and I’m disappointed for them that they were robbed of their final season. Two of our varsity players, Mitchell Hanosh & Caden Dempsey, also missed out on finishing their senior seasons in basketball. The Maple Boys made it to the regional final and were playing so well before the pandemic called for the cancellation of winter sports tournaments and our spring seasons. Both Mitchell and Caden spent a ton of time working on their skills over the summer last year and even during the winter as their schedules would permit. I’d like to say how much I appreciated the effort those two senior captains put in to improve and the results of their hard work shows. Special shout out to sophomore, Jack Balasz, for dedicating time over the winter to improve his game as well. Jack put in the work that had him pushing the seniors above him for one of the top spots.
To my seniors; Mitchell Hanosh, Caden Dempsey, Cohl Beaubien & Carter Clark, thanks for all the hard work and laughs along the way. I wish we could have seen where all of you could of taken this squad in 2020 but it wasn’t meant to be. Just remember though, you’ll now forever be able to tell all your friends that your senior year, the golf team never lost a match!
Finally, I would like to thank all of the boys for their effort and enthusiasm this spring as we were just getting started with practices. We were in for a fun and successful season judging by the effort they gave and the smiles on their faces.
Until we can play again as a team next spring, hit ’em long & straight and make sure you putt everything out.
